Sir, – Congratulations to Denis Walsh on his article re handicaps (“Handicap System giving ‘bandits’ more scope to deceive”, October 31st).
I agree fully with him. The World Handicap System is a very good system if used properly. However after a year of the present system, it is apparent that a small number of golfers are manipulating the system so that they can win prizes. It is impossible to have a system that is perfect but the present system is facilitating manipulation.
In my opinion all competitions should count for handicap purposes. Casual rounds of golf should not count for handicap purposes. If Golf Ireland does not remedy this situation, many club golfers will not enter competitions as they have no hope of winning.
