Sir, – Irish adoptees now have greater access to information about their biological family. Within hours of birthinfo.ie opening on October 3rd, there were over 200 applicants. In contrast, people who were conceived by means of anonymous egg and/or sperm donation through fertility clinics from the last century up to May 2020 have no right to ever access information about, or have contact with, biological family. Citizens born through egg and/or sperm donation since May 2020 are banned from having contact with biological family, or access to medical history through their childhood. They may only access information or attempt contact once they turn 18.
Other Irish citizens are protected from any third party altering their identity or wilfully withholding knowledge of or access to kin.
