Quieter travel on trains

Sir, – One of the wonderful things about long-distance train travel in Japan is that the carriages are for the most part silent.

Travellers with mobile phones move to designated areas to take calls so as to not annoy other passengers. Those listening to music or watching videos use headphones. Conversations are generally muted.

I only wish that we could do the same in this country. – Yours, etc,
