Sir, – As it was with turf-cutting so it is with beef production. Both cutting and saving turf and beef production are carried out by an increasingly older generation.
The small-time beef producers of the west of Ireland are mostly part-time farmers, as I was. I fitted the farm work in round the day job as best I could and the minute income was just reward. In the same way turf is cut and saved.
The following generation are not prepared to put in the hours and sacrifice for such a minuscule income or simply to have the pleasure of burning their own turf.
If the environmentalists could just be patient and wait a few years there will be no turf-cutting and very few beef cattle. – Yours, etc,
