A 29-year-old woman was charged yesterday with the murder of her seven-year-old son and brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court. Ms Jacqueline Costello, of Deerpark, Mullinavat, was remanded in custody to Limerick Prison on Thursday.

She was charged with the murder of Robert Costello at Deerpark, Mullinavat, on October 28th. Judge Dermot Earley granted the defendant free legal aid. Asked if she was working, she shook her head and spoke only to name a Waterford solicitor, Ms Rosie O'Flynn, whom she wished to represent her.

Ms O'Flynn asked that Ms Costello be given medical treatment while on remand, and Judge Earley made an order recommending that she receive a psychiatric assessment while in Limerick Prison.
