An American Airlines flight from London to New York made an emergency landing today at Shannon Airport after the pilot reported an electrical fault.

American Airlines Flight 105, with 190 passengers and crew on board, was en route from Heathrow to John F Kennedy International Airport when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and requested permission to make an emergency landing.

Fire personnel carried out an external inspection of the plane for several minutes before it was declared safe and allowed continue to taxi to the terminal building where the passengers disembarked.

A more thorough examination of the aircraft was continuing but a replacement aircraft was expected in Shannon shortly to take the passengers to New York.
