Colombo - The United Nations yesterday began pulling out of Sri Lanka's northern peninsula of Jaffna as Tamil Tiger guerrillas claimed further gains against government forces amid heavy casualties on both sides.

The government responded to the stepped-up attacks by the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by mobilising some 4,000 men who had retired early from the armed services.
