Two brothers appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with an incident in Carlingford, Co Louth, which resulted in the death of a local man on Sunday afternoon.

Gardaí yesterday confirmed the name of the deceased as Joseph Hosford (44), of Mountain Park, Carlingford.

His body was found at a caravan beside a partially-built house at Mountain Park. A postmortem confirmed yesterday that he died from a single stab wound.

The charges dealt with at Drogheda District Court yesterday arose from an alleged assault on another man during the same incident.

Brothers Martin McMasters (29) and Gareth McMasters (28), St Oliver's Park, Carlingford, were each charged with assault causing harm to Michael Hosford at Mountain Park on Sunday, June 24th, 2007.

Judge Flann Brennan was told that neither man made any reply when the charge was put to them.

Gardaí objected to bail on grounds including allegations that witnesses could be interfered with, and that further charges may follow.

Judge Brennan remanded both in custody to appear before Dundalk District Court tomorrow.
