Two brothers were jailed at Limerick Circuit Court yesterday for assaulting a garda.

Two brothers were jailed at Limerick Circuit Court yesterday for assaulting a garda.

Wayne McCarthy Dundon (24) and his 18-year-old brother, Dessie McCarthy Dundon, pleaded guilty to assaulting Det Garda Pat Cox on September 5th, 2000, at Hyde Road, Limerick.

Garda Sgt Declan Treacy gave evidence of Det Garda Cox receiving serious injuries to his left arm and shoulder during the assault.

Judge Sean O'Leary was told that a gate pillar was knocked over, and parts of it were thrown at gardaí by Wayne McCarthy Dundon.

The assault occurred during attempts to arrest one of the accused, Dessie McCarthy Dundon.

Det Garda Cox, who was attached to Roxboro station and is now retired, said he was out of work for six months because of his injuries.

The judge sentenced Wayne McCarthy Dundon to two years in prison and imposed a 15-month sentence on Dessie McCarthy Dundon, suspending the final six months for two years.
