In the North, a male motorcyclist was killed today in a collision with a police motorcycle.

The crash occurred on the Garron Road between Carnlough and Larne at about 2.20pm as police motorcyclists were escorting other motorbike riders to an event on the north coast.

The road was closed as an investigation got underway and the Police Ombudsman has been informed.

Declan O’Loan, SDLP Assembly member for North Antrim, expressed his sympathy to the family of the motorcyclist killed today.

"It is very sad when a motorcycle outing on this beautiful spring day ends in such tragedy. The very high number of motorcycle fatalities must cause all of us great concern. This is an area of road safety which needs particular attention.”
