Gardaí at Thurles, Co Tipperary, have appealed for information surrounding the discovery of the body of a 55-year-old man on the main Dublin to Cork road about a half mile from Johnstown, Co Kilkenny.

The man, who has not yet been named by gardaí, was found beside his bicycle at 11.50 p.m. on Friday night.

Gardaí believe the road would have been busy at the time and have asked anyone with information to contact Thurles Garda Station, tel: 0504-25100.

In a second fatal accident, which occurred at Killawalla, Westport, Co Mayo, shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, a man was killed in a three-vehicle pile-up.

A male motorcyclist was fatally injured when he was involved in a collision with a car and a tractor.

Gardaí said the deceased was was a 19-year-old from the Westport area and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to the mortuary in Mayo General Hospital.

In a third fatal accident over the weekend, a 73-year-old man was killed when the jeep he was driving collided with a tractor and trailer.

The accident occurred at Loghturk West, Kiltormer, Co Galway, yesterday evening, shortly before 5 p.m. The deceased was removed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

The deaths brought to 120 the number of people killed on the State's roads so far this year, about 28 per cent above the figure for the same period last year.
