TDs who had loaded weapons pointed at them by Israeli soldiers while on a fact-finding trip to Palestine have lodged an official notice of the incident with a UN observer in the region.

Six members of the Oireachtas were on a three-day tour and were confronted by the soldiers while walking through a deserted market area of Hebron. "Two Israeli soldiers shouted at us, then took up shooting positions," said Green Party chairman John Gormley.

He said he had made an official report to a UN observer. " What we witnessed on our trip is worse than the apartheid regime was in South Africa."
