Cape Canaveral - The space shuttle Endeavour blasted off yesterday as its five-astronaut crew began a high-energy construction mission to the International Space Station.

The crew, led by shuttle commander Brent Jett, will hang an enormous array of power-generating solar-panelled "wings" on the station, then play Santa Claus to the three men now living there, who will spend Christmas in space.
