An off-duty garda was set upon by a group of six people as he walked along a laneway close to Dundalk town centre in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The garda, who is stationed in Dundalk, had been "kicked, beaten and punched" in the attack which happened at River Lane at 1.30 a.m., according to a Garda spokesman.

The garda received facial and body injuries and was yesterday being treated at Louth County Hospital.
