Seven gardai are being treated in hospital after acid was sprayed on them in a Dublin courthouse yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at Kilmainham District Court when a man in his late thirties being restrained for contempt of court sprayed the contents of a bottle on surrounding gardaí.

The courthouse, where Judge Brady was sitting, was evacuated and all sittings cancelled for the rest of the day.

Two gardaí are being treated for minor burns and five for inhalation at St James's Hospital. Their condition is described as comfortable.

The contents of the bottle have not yet been identified. A Garda spokeswoman said the substance burned clothing and caused breathing difficulties.
