Racing: Today's National Hunt fixture at Sandown has been abandoned due to false areas of ground at the track.

Following significant rainfall earlier in the week, clerk of the course Andrew Cooper held a 7.30am inspection ahead of this afternoon's card.

Although the course only experienced light rain overnight, he was not satisfied with conditions and had to call the meeting off.

"We've taken a view that, sadly, we're going to have to abandon today's racing," he said.

"We only had three millimetres of rain here overnight but in places you just know we'd had it as there are false patches of ground.

"From a safety point of view we just didn't quite make it in terms of drying out. We needed a dry night really."

Cooper is cautiously optimistic that racing will take place at the venue tomorrow - providing the course escapes any more significant precipitation.
