The Independent TD Mr Paudge Connolly has been chosen to head the list of replacement candidates for a fellow independent, Ms Marian Harkin, in the European Parliament elections.

The Department of the Environment yesterday published the list of candidates and their replacements for the four European constituencies in advance of the election on June 11th.

Should any elected MEP subsequently resign their seat during their five-year term, the person at the top of the list has the automatic right to take the seat. Should that person decline, the right to the seat passes to the next on the list.

While the political parties selected and announced their possible replacements at selection conventions in recent months, the Department's lists also show the replacements chosen by independent candidates.
