The dispute between tenants and the landlord of 29 houses in Dublin's north inner city escalated yesterday with the news that the landlord had increased their rents. On Thursday the landlord, Mr Austin Kelly, had called off the auction of the houses on Enaville Avenue and St Patrick's Street due to tenants' protests.

Speaking on RTE Radio last night, one tenant said her rent had gone up from £65 to £110 while another said her rent had been increased by £40.

Independent TD Mr Tony Gregory said he would be advising the tenants not to pay the increased rents, and that Threshold should advise them of their rights.
