The racecourse at Greenpark in Limerick city is to be closed while work continues on a new £9 million track at Patricks well. The board of the Limerick Race Co decided this week to close Greenpark on March 21st.

The next Limerick Christmas meeting will be at Mallow racecourse.

Horse racing at Greenpark, off the South Circular Road, has been taking place since 1869. It is hoped that the new track on the outskirts of the city will be ready by the autumn of next year. Already, £2.5 million has been spent on developing the Patrickswell site, which is close to the new ring road between Adare and Annacotty.

The Irish Horse Racing Authority has approved £3 million in grants for the new track.
