A man in his 50s was shot several times in the lower body by a lone gunman shortly after 5.30pm yesterday at Waterloo Street close to the Bogside area of Derry.

The victim was working in the Red Star shop when a gunman, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet, burst in and opened fire, hitting him several times.

The gunman then fled the scene on a motorbike.

The victim was brought to hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The shop, which sells imitation firearms and imitation swords, was closed by police officers following the gun attack.

The PSNI is appealing for witnesses to the shooting and is urging anyone who may have seen anything to come forward.
