Johannesburg - South Africa's local government elections, held on Tuesday, pointed to a stronger than expected showing by the newly-formed Democratic Alliance (DA) and a slight decline in support for the African National Congress, Patrick Laurence writes.

With about half the vote counted last night, most of it in urban areas, the Democratic Alliance had won 29 per cent of the poll compared with 59 per cent for the ruling ANC.
