Madrid - A Spanish socialist politician was seriously wounded by gunmen last night in an attack that bore the hallmarks of the Basque separatist group ETA, state radio reported.

Mr Jose Ramon Recalde, a former justice minister in the Basque regional government, was shot once in the head in the port city of San Sebastian, the radio said. Mr Recalde was leaving his office in the Igueldo neighbourhood.

ETA has been linked to 12 killings this year since calling off a 14-month-long ceasefire last December. Its summer offensive of bombings and assassinations has been the bloodiest in a decade.
