Police and British troops separated rival factions on the loyalist Shankill Road in west Belfast last night after a standoff had developed when a number of men started to erect paramilitary flags.

Meanwhile, a man in his 20s was arrested last night after a firearm was discharged from a car in the nationalist Falls Road/Thames Street area of west Belfast at around 7 p.m. yesterday evening.

The RUC last night said they believed the shot fired had been a blank.
