Objections to a €300 million redevelopment scheme proposed for Greystones harbour in Co Wicklow came from places as diverse as Co Mayo and Cuba, writes Tim O'Brien

Of 6,210 objections, half came from the Greystones area, 23 per cent were from the Dublin area, while there were "quite a few" from the US, Germany, Switzerland and "a few" from the UK. One objection came from Cuba. A statement by the community group, which supplied the breakdown and which favours the redevelopment, said it was concerned that "so many people outside the area, who know little of the benefits of the project, are objecting to it".

Fiachra Etchingham of the Greystones Protection and Development Association took issue with the group's analysis, saying the harbour had "always been a significant amenity for many people from Dublin and beyond".
