Swimming:It was a disappointing morning for the Irish contingent at the European Swimming Championships at Debrecen in Hungary as they failed to progress beyond the morning heats.

Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher and Bethany Carson were all eliminated from the 200 metres freestyle, while Karl Burdis finished eight in his heat of the men’s 200 metres backstroke. Nuala Murphy had to withdraw because of illness.

Burdis, in attempting to make the Olympic A qualifying standard in the heats for the 100 backstroke, was two seconds outside the mark with a time of 56.56 seconds.
