The actor Niall Toibín will be honoured by the Gaiety Theatre this evening when an impression of his handprints will be cast in bronze and placed in the plaza in front of the theatre.

Mr Toibín's prints will join those of Maureen Potter, John B. Keane and Anna Manahan.

"It will be a proud day for me, my appearances on the Gaiety stage are without doubt the highlights of my career and I am honoured to have been asked to give my prints," Mr Toibín said.

Mr Toibín, from Cork, began acting as a teenager with Keating Branch of the Gaelic League.

Equally comfortable with comedy and drama, Toibín quickly became a staple of British and Irish television with strong ties to RTE, ITN and the BBC.

John Costigan, Managing Director of the Gaiety Theatre, said "We are delighted that Niall has agreed to have his handprints taken, Niall's contribution to the Gaiety and to Irish theatre is truly immense."
