A murder hunt was under way in Cork yesterday after a 28-year-old man suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest.

It is understood that a party was being held at Clashduv Road, Togher, in the western suburbs of the city, when a man burst into an apartment, singled out another man and stabbed him once in the chest.

Mr Alan Kelleher was rushed to Cork University Hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Gardai were on the scene quickly. A garda patrol car was in the area when the stabbing occurred at 4 a.m., but the attacker had fled. The people who were in the apartment at the time were being questioned by gardai in Cork yesterday, and a forensic examination of the scene was being carried out.

Gardai want to speak to anyone who may have seen a person acting suspiciously in the Clashduv Road area between 2 a.m. and 4.30 a.m.

Hackney- and taxi-drivers have been asked to come forward if they collected or dropped off passengers in the area about that time.

A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were still being detained yesterday in connection with a Dublin drugs seizure. Gardai seized cannabis resin worth £20,000 and cocaine valued at £10,000 at a flat in Blessington Street, on Wednesday evening.

They were arrested and detained under the Drug Trafficking Act and are being held in Store Street Garda station.
