Paid maternity and adoptive leave for mothers has been extended by four weeks to 18 weeks at an estimated cost of £20 million a year.

In addition, the period of unpaid leave has been doubled to eight weeks. The new periods of leave - which can be taken by a mother in the period around the birth or adoption of her child - will apply from April next.
