The Government has approved the drafting of legislation which will allow for an increase in the number of High Court judges to 27, reports Miriam Donohoe.

The necessary legislative provisions will be included in the Courts and Courts Officers Bill 2000 to be published by the Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, next month.

Mr O'Donoghue said yesterday he was keen to ensure the smooth functioning of the High Court given the ongoing commitments of High Court judges outside of normal judicial functions.
