Islamabad - Ravaged by the worst drought in decades, up to one million Afghanis could die of starvation this winter, United Nations officials said yesterday.

The UN's World Food Programme, feeding about 2.3 million Afghanis, is running out of money, the agency director, Mr Gerard van Dijk, said in Islamabad. The Rome-based agency has asked for £35 million in emergency aid.
