Roscommon is seeking to raise its tourism profile with a £200,000 network of tourist signposts highlighting the sites of interest in the county.
Displaying a specific logo, these signs, funded by Bord Failte, will outline a number of tourist trails, drawing attention to historical and archaeological sites, local amenities and areas of interest.
There will be two types of sign. One will be placed outside every town and village listing the various services and amenities available. On the approach to the towns and villages, there will be different signs with a full map of the county on one side, and on the other, a map of a recommended route for that part of the county, displaying the amenities available along it.
For example, the Roscommon Eastern Drive Route will go from Tarmonbarry, just over the Shannon from Longford, through Rooskey, also on the Shannon, Kilglass Lakes, Strokestown, Tulsk, Roscommon and Lanesboro.
The Mid-Roscommon Drive Route will start in Roscommon town and take in Ballintubber, Castlerea, Ballaghadereen, Elphin and connect with the Eastern Drive in Strokestown.
