A Cork man who assaulted the husband of a French woman injured in a street attack almost two years ago was given a community service order yesterday.
Damien Dowdall, (25), of Barbery Grove, Knocknaheeny, Cork, had previously been convicted of assaulting Mr Kevin Dorgan in North Main Street in the city on September 24th, 2000.
Mr Dorgan was prevented from going to the assistance of his wife Lila after she was attacked by two women just yards from the couple's home.
June Moore and Linda O'Driscoll, both (21), from Kilalla Gardens, Knocknaheeny, Cork, were jailed for three years for the assault.
During the attack Mrs Dorgan had large lumps of her hair pulled out, while her head was repeatedly struck off the pavement.
The incident occurred when Lila Dorgan arrived at her house following a night out and spotted June Moore urinating near her front door.
Cork District Court was told Dowdall who is Linda O'Driscoll's partner attacked and kicked Mr Dorgan when he tried to protect his wife.
Judge Terence Finn sentenced the accused to 180 hours community service for the assault.
Dowdall was also sentenced to a further 60 hours community service on a second charge of obstructing a garda who arrived on the scene.
