A 43-year-old father of two was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of another man who was found with stab wounds in a flat in Charleville in north Cork last September.
José Domingos, a native of Brazil with an address at Old Limerick Road, Charleville, was yesterday charged with the murder of fellow Brazilian Alberto do Prado Oliveira (47) at Main Street, Charleville on September 21st, 2006.
Det Garda Liam Ruttle told Newcastlewest District Court in Co Limerick yesterday morning that he arrested Mr Domingos and put the murder charge to him after caution. Mr Domingos made no reply, said Det Garda Ruttle.
Mr Domingos, a meat factory employee, had previously been charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr Oliveira and with producing a knife capable of causing serious injury in a manner likely to intimidate during the course of a fight on the same occasion.
Yesterday Supt Joe Roe asked that Mr Domingos be returned to the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court and said that the existing two charges against him relating to the assault and possession of the knife were being withdrawn by the State.
Judge Mary O'Halloran agreed to the State application and remanded Mr Domingos in custody to appear at the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin. The existing two charges were also struck out.
A married man with three sons, Mr Oliveira was from Anápolis in Goiás state in central Brazil and had come to Charleville in 2004, where he began working as a boner at Galtee Meats. He was joined in north Cork just four months before his death by his wife, Sueli.
Mrs Oliveira returned to Brazil upon her husband's death to be reunited with her sons, who had been living with relatives in Anápolis.
