A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man (28) who absconded after he was convicted earlier this year of raping a woman in Co Clare.

At the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, Mr Justice Paul Carney said he expected all the necessary steps to be taken by the authorities to execute the warrant for Adriano Kiel, including extradition proceedings. Kiel is a Brazilian national.

Kiel, with an address in Limerick, failed to turn up for his sentencing hearing today.

He was found guilty in January of raping a woman at a hotel in Newmarket-on-Fergus on December 2nd, 2003.

Sergeant Gerard Reidy told the court that Kiel had been out on bail and had last signed on at Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick last week.

He said he had called to Kiel's house twice and had been told by his partner that she had not seen him.
