Abidjan - Ivorians turned out in low numbers yesterday for a presidential election aimed at restoring civilian rule after 10 months of turbulent military leadership under Gen Robert Guei, who is vying to hold on to power.

The anticipated high stayaway rate is expected to further tarnish the credibility of the vote, after the majority of presidential candidates were eliminated from the race by a controversial Supreme Court ruling.
