London - British television's standards chief resigned yesterday after confirming a newspaper report that he had been involved in a recent extramarital affair.

The Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Holmes, chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission, said in a statement he was stepping down to maintain public respect for high standards in British broadcasting.

Lord Holmes (64) said he had confessed the affair, which he said ended three weeks ago, to his wife and the couple planned to stay together.
