Joe Kernan was formally ratified as the new Galway senior football manager at a county board meeting in Loughgeorge this evening.
After the former Armagh manager announced his interest there was little doubt he would be the man to succeed Liam Sammon, who left the helm in the wake of Galway’s championship exit to Donegal in the fourth round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.
Former Westmeath manager Tomás O’Flatharta, who was last night replaced by Brendan Hackett, was also in the running but always second favourite to the man who guided Armagh to their first and only All-Ireland in 2002.
One of Kernan’s first jobs will be to survey his options in the county championship semi-finals on Sunday, when Salthill meet Corofin and Caltra take on the upcoming Mountbellew-Moylough.
