Judge issues arrest warrants for 16 Travellers

Sixteen members of the Travelling community had bench warrants issued for their arrest after failing to appear at New Ross District Court yesterday. They were due to face charges arising out of a series of disturbances in Wexford town and at the local general hospital on Sunday.

Just two of the 18 charged people were in court yesterday before Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla.

Among those who did appear was Michael Slattery (37), Ballywilliam, Rathkeale, Co Limerick. He has been ordered to reappear in court on June 21st, charged with refusing to leave the Centenary Stores Night Club in Charlotte Street, Wexford, when requested by gardaí, with threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, and with a breach of the peace at Charlotte Street on June 4th.

Also before the court was Martin O'Brien (40), Cooluvin Park, Ballybrack, Co Wicklow, who is charged with refusing to provide a specimen of blood to a doctor at Wexford Garda Station having been stopped on suspicion of drink driving at Ferrybank on June 6th. His case was adjourned to New Ross District Court on September 14th.

Among those who failed to appear were James Gammill, Roches Road, Rathkeale, Limerick, charged with allowing a vehicle to obstruct traffic at Ferrybank, and David Kealy, Donegall Road, Belfast, charged with being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Trinity Street, Wexford, on June 6th.

Denis Sheridan, Wolverhampton, Britain, and Patrick Flynn, Botanic Avenue, Belfast, were both charged with being intoxicated and a danger to themselves and others at Trinity Street, Wexford, on June 6th.

Jeremiah Quilligan, Fairhill, Rathkeale, Limerick, is charged with using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, and being intoxicated and a danger to himself at Wexford General Hospital.

John Flynn, Roches Road, Rathkeale, faces three charges of being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Wexford General Hospital, and also of a breach of the peace.

Patrick Kealy, Pastland, Monasterevin, Co Kildare, also failed to appear on charges of loitering in a public place; being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others; and a breach of the peace at Wexford General Hospital on June 6th.

James O'Driscoll, 56 Forhill Road, Newry, Co Down, was not present to face a charge of being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Wexford General Hospital.

Richard O'Brien, Arder Drive, Smithy Fen, Cottenham, Cambridge, Britain, was also not present to answer a charge of being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Trinity Street on June 6th.

John Quilligan, Roches Road, Rathkeale, Limerick, failed to appear on a charge of being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Selskar, Wexford, on June 6th.

Daniel Kealy, Cologne Street, Keady, Armagh, and Dan Quilligan,of Burnwood, Lindon, England, are also charged with the same offence at Trinity Street on June 6th.

Danny Flynn, Roches Road, Rathkeale, Limerick, failed to appear on a charge of being intoxicated and a danger to himself and others at Selskar, Wexford, on June 6th.

James Flynn, Newry Road, Camlough, Newry, Co Down, and William O'Driscoll, Main Street, Mountfield, Co Tyrone, were not in court to face charges of trespass at Ferrybank, Wexford, on June 3rd.

Michael Cuilligan, Roches Road, Rathkeale, was also not in court to face a charge of failing to comply with directions of gardaí while driving at Ferrybank, Wexford, on June 3rd.

Judge Ó Buachalla issued Bench Warrants on the application of Garda Inspector Peter Finn, prosecuting, for those who failed to appear.
