The news that the State has withdrawn its remaining High Court actions against the liquidator of Irish Ispat and that it is to pay the liquidator's costs adds insult to injury it was claimed today.

Mr Dan Boyle of the Green Party said "this tawdry saga, which has brought and will bring an unacceptably high cost to the state and taxpayer, in the region of €70 million, is a controversy on which I have sought detailed investigations as a member of the Public Accounts Committee."

"While the financial sums connected to this controversy continue to mount up,

thousands upon thousands of tonnes of toxic waste remain on Haulbowline island, the site of the former steelworks, still waiting to be safely taken away," Mr Boyle concluded.
