An Irish priest, who was shot in South Africa on Wednesday, remains in a critical condition in hospital today.

Fr Kieran Creagh (43), who runs an Aids hospice in the deprived township of Atteridgeville West, underwent a critical operation in a Pretoria hospital yesterday after being shot twice by raiders who broke into the hospice in an apparent botched robbery attempt.

The Belfast-born Passionist priest's father and brother have travelled to South Africa to be with him.

Fr Creagh gained worldwide attention for his role in helping to develop an experimental Aids vaccine and is a former ESB/Rehab International Person of the Year.
