An Irish couple have been killed in a road traffic accident while on holidays in Italy. Mr Jimmy Bowe and his wife Ellen, of Ardeevin Road, Dalkey, in South County Dublin, died as a result of the crash last Tuesday evening.

The couple's son who was in the car suffered serious injuries, however they are not thought to be life-threatening. He was still in hospital over the weekend in a stable condition.

The incident occurred only days after the family had flown into Milan for a driving holiday. The couple's daughter Susan was in Italy over the weekend making arrangements to bring her parents' remains home.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday: "We can confirm that two Irish nationals were killed as a result of a road traffic accident in Italy last week.
