Two-year-old boy drowns in Spain

Victim fell into a swimming pool near his home in Mijas on the Costa Del Sol

A two-year-old Irish boy has died in Spain after falling into a swimming pool.

The boy drowned yesterday morning near his home in Mijas, near Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol.

Local media reported that though no one saw the drowning take place, the child’s parents and police suspect the boy was walking along a wall that separated his family’s home from the property next door, when he lost his balance and fell into the neighbour’s pool. The boy’s father reportedly pulled him from the water but was unable to revive him.

Though emergency services were called, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy has not been named.

It is understood his parents are Irish and have been living in Spain for a number of years.

Last night the Department of Foreign Affairs said it had not been contacted for consular assistance but would be available if required.
