Car left motorway and hit ditch on M8

A man in his 60s has died in a car crash in Tipperary.

The car he was driving left the M8 motorway northbound near Junction 7 Cahir at about 4pm and hit a ditch, a Garda spokesman said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a man in his 20s, was taken by ambulance to Clonmel Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Forensic collision investigators were due to attend the scene and diversions were in place.

The man’s death brings to 184 the number of people who have died on the State’s roads to date this year compared to 160 by the same date last year.

Some 93 of those who have died were drivers, while 31 were passengers. Twenty-six motorcyclists and five cyclists have been killed and 29 pedestrians also died.
