Israel calls on pope to open war archives
ROME – Israel yesterday asked Pope Benedict XVI to open up the Vatican archives covering the wartime papacy of pope Pius XII, who has been accused of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust.
Israeli deputy prime minister Silvan Shalom, speaking after a visit by the pope to Rome’s synagogue yesterday, said such a move might help ease tensions between the Jewish people and Catholics. – (Reuters)
Colombian 'drug lord' captured
CARACAS – Venezuelan soldiers have captured alleged Colombian drug lord Salomon Camacho, known as “Big Papa”, who has a $5 million (€3.48 million) price on his head in the US.
Rewards of $5 million are usually only offered for senior drug traffickers and cartel leaders. Camacho is a former partner of the dead leader of the Medellín cartel, Pablo Escobar. – (Reuters)
Priory clinic chain plans flotation
LONDON – A chain of private rehab clinics best known for treating celebrities confirmed plans for a stock market flotation as it looks to an “ambitious expansion programme”. The Priory said the move would help it attract funding for future growth to meet a growing need for independent specialist mental healthcare. – (PA)
