Sudan said today it would not welcome investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has announced a formal probe into suspected war crimes in the Darfur region.
“If they want to observe what is going on from the ICC and others, they are welcome (but) if they want to start trials of the Sudanese this is not acceptable,” Majzoub al-Khalifa, the head of the government's Darfur talks team, told Reuters. “The investigation is part of the trial system.”.
The ICC today formally launched an investigation into alleged war crimes in Darfur. The Sudanese government says it will not send any citizen to a court outside its territory.
