Mountain safety people you would love to come across on a night out are two-a-penny. A mountainside encounter is, however, another matter. Keep your meetings with rescuers strictly to a social setting by observing these rules:
Wear sturdy boots with good ankle support.
Carry a light rucksack with waterproofs, additional warm clothing, and energy food such as chocolate.
Plan your walk carefully and be sure you can complete it before dark.

Carry a mobile phone but never rely on it.
Let someone know your intended route and the time you are due back.
Carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
Check the weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
