Fishermen who breached EU fishing regulations in Irish waters can expect heavy fines, a judge warned yesterday as he fined four foreign skippers a total of £35,000 and ordered the confiscation of catches and gear totalling over £77,000.

Judge A.G. Murphy warned that he would not tolerate the over-fishing of Irish waters when he imposed the fines on two French and two Spanish skippers yesterday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
