Government defers tribunals Bill

The Government has postponed the introduction in the Dáil of the Bill giving it the power to close down tribunals.

The Government has postponed the introduction in the Dáil of the Bill giving it the power to close down tribunals.

Minister for Finance Brian Cowen told the House yesterday that the Tribunal of Inquiry Bill was not on this week's order paper because of the necessity to include a motion on Irish troops going to Lebanon. "The Bill has been dropped off the schedule for the moment. That does not mean it has been withdrawn."

He was replying to Labour leader Pat Rabbitte, who asked if the Government had cancelled or rethought the Bill.
