GARDAÍ IN Galway have issued a new appeal for help in trying to catch a man who subjected an 80-year-old woman to a vicious assault early on New Year’s Day.

Gardaí have now confirmed that the elderly woman was subjected to an assault that went on for an hour and half after the man broke into her house in Shantalla on the west of the city.

The woman, who lived alone, is in hospital in Galway recovering from her injuries and is in deep shock.

Supt Tom Curley said described the man who carried out the attack as as about six feet in height, in his 20s with dark hair short at the sides, slightly curly on top wearing dark trousers or jeans, a dark top and black shoes.
