Gardaí in Limerick are investigating an alleged rape in the city early yesterday morning.

The attack took place between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. near Punches Cross, on the outskirts of the city;. The victim was taken to the Sexual Assault unit in Cork yesterday for examination.

A large area was cordoned off yesterday including a disused petrol station where gardaí were conducting a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí at Roxboro Garda Station are investigating the alleged sexual assault and have appealed for witnesses to contact them on (061) 214340.

"The alleged assault took place in what would be a very busy area and there were a lot of people in the city on St Stephen's night socialising, many of whom might have been in the area looking for taxis," said a Garda spokesman.

It is understood the victim was assaulted by a sole male attacker. Local reports suggested that she may have been followed by her attacker as she walked from the city centre.
